Oculoplastics is the subspecialty that joins ophthalmology to the reconstructive and cosmetic surgery of the area surrounding the eye. It has been the core of my practice since 2003.
Ocular OncologySubspecialty
Not every lesion that appears on the eye or the eyelid is a tumour, but every lesion that grows, bleeds or distorts the eyelid margin needs to be assessed. Early diagnosis changes the outlook completely.
Blepharoplasty
Blepharoplasty removes excess skin and the bags from the eyelids. When it is done by an oculoplastic eye surgeon, the assessment starts with the eye: with the visual field that has been lost, and with the ocular surface that has to stay protected afterwards.
Eye Care for Children and Adults
Many diseases of the retina and the optic nerve have no treatment once they are diagnosed at an advanced stage. That single sentence explains why periodic check-ups exist.
Ocular Surface Disease
The ocular surface is the eye's first lens. When it is disturbed, vision fluctuates, the eye burns and feels uncomfortable, even if the prescription is perfect.
Glaucoma and Cataracts
Cataracts and glaucoma can both cause loss of vision, but they behave in opposite ways: the loss caused by a cataract is almost always recovered; the loss caused by glaucoma is, to this day, irreversible.
Myopia
Myopia is not just a prescription. When it is high, it changes the anatomy of the eye and with it the risk of other diseases across a lifetime.
Hyperopia
Hyperopia is compensated for with effort. That is why it can go unnoticed for years and show up as headache rather than blurred vision.
Retinal Detachment
Of everything on this page, this is the one that cannot wait. A retinal detachment is treated in hours or days, not weeks.
Corneal Transplant
Modern keratoplasty no longer always replaces the whole cornea. Today only the damaged layer can be replaced, which changes both recovery and the risk of rejection.
