Myopia (Short-sightedness)
Myopia is not just a prescription. When it is high, it changes the anatomy of the eye and with it the risk of other diseases across a lifetime.
What it is
Myopia is a refractive error, meaning that the eye does not bend light properly to see images clearly. When myopia is present, near objects are seen clearly but distant ones look blurred.
It happens because the eye is somewhat longer than its optical power calls for, or because the cornea is too steeply curved. In both cases the image forms in front of the retina instead of on it.
Why it should be monitored, not just corrected
Correcting myopia with glasses or refractive surgery solves the vision. But high myopia means a structurally different eye: longer, with a thinner retina at the periphery. That is associated with a greater risk of:
- Retinal tears and detachment.
- Glaucoma.
- Degenerative changes in the macula.
That is why, in a patient with high myopia, follow-up includes examination of the fundus and the peripheral retina, not just an update of the prescription.
Warning signs
If flashes of light, a sudden increase in floaters or a shadow at the edge of the visual field appear suddenly, seek help immediately: they may indicate a retinal tear.
Frequently asked questions
Can myopia be stopped?
In adults it usually stabilises on its own. In children and adolescents there are strategies for controlling progression that are assessed case by case, alongside habits that do have a demonstrated effect, such as increasing time outdoors and moderating sustained close work.
Why is my retina examined if I only need glasses?
Because in myopia the eye is longer than normal and the retina is more stretched and thinner at the periphery. That increases the risk of tears and retinal detachment. In high myopia, examining the peripheral retina is part of routine monitoring, not an extra test.
Do glasses weaken your eyes?
No. It is a widespread belief with no basis. What happens is that, once used to seeing sharply, a patient perceives their own blurriness more clearly when they take their glasses off. The prescription changes on its own, not because you wear them.
